Yobe state Governor Alhaji Mai Mala Buni has advocated for closer tie between the security, stakeholders and members of the general public by imbibing the all hands on deck strategy for the effective decrease in the insurgency menace bedeviling the north-east region.
Governor Buni made the advocation during a North-East Security Summit organized by the office of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
Buni explained that states in the north-east and even the country will be better when security and the general public work together against any individual or group who threaten the peace and security of the nation.
“Over the last eight years, our people have borne the brunt as the insurgents attacked towns and villages, set schools, public and private buildings on fire, and caused hundreds of thousands of people to become internally displaced.”
Governor Buni noted that “the Yobe State Government believes that we, as a people, cannot make meaningful socio-economic progress while these security challenges persist. We have to confront them.”
Buni also stressed the need for more strategy that will engage the general public in the quest for lasting peace, a policy, he said since adopted in Yobe state for better result.
“Through deliberate public information and enlightenment campaigns, we should work to make members of the public active partners of our security agencies, by getting them to pass useful information whenever they noticed any suspicious persons or movements.” The Governor added.
The IGP said the summit was convened in order to strategies and employs all inclusive approach that will help internal security mandate of the Nigerian police.
The IG said the security meeting was also meant to design all-inclusive approach to the complexity and challenges of crime in Nigeria adding “that public trust, consent and partnership are the foundation upon which policing rest.”
Professor Umara Zulum, the Governor of Borno state, who hosted the summit, advised the military to take the war to the enclaves of the insurgents and advocated for the restoration of civil authority in all the liberated areas.
