150mw to be added to national grid before year end — Adelabu
Nigeria is set to add 150 megawatts (MW) to its national grid before the end of 2024, according to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday after a closed-door meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Adelabu provided an update on the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). He confirmed that the pilot phase of the project is 80% complete, involving the importation, installation, and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations. Two of these substations remain to be commissioned before the end of the year.
Adelabu emphasized that the pilot phase has already contributed at least 750 megawatts to Nigeria’s transmission grid capacity, helping stabilize the grid. He stated that by the end of 2024, the full completion of the pilot phase would add another 150 megawatts.
This announcement comes as the national grid suffered its 12th collapse of the year, plunging millions into darkness. Experts have attributed the frequent grid failures to aging infrastructure and other challenges.
However, Adelabu reassured Nigerians that improvements are on the way. “Once Phase One of the transmission project is complete, the entire grid will be upgraded, ensuring greater stability. The current grid is old, fragile, and deteriorating, and we must revamp it for long-term stability,” he said.
