Acting President yemi Osinbajo has said that the war on terror requires a new narrative and dimension in order to restore peaceful in the troubled north East.
Osinbajo said there was a connection between terrorism on one hand, poverty and ignorance on the other, restating the need to develop alternative strategies to confront terrorism and other forms of violence.
He spoke when he received a delegation of the World Leadership Alliance also known as Club de Madrid in Abuja.
Professor Osinbajo said: “With respect to violent extremism, I am pleased you are taking it on. It is a very complex problem for those of us who have to deal with it on a daily basis. There is no question that we need to develop counter-narratives.
“We are faced with emotive narratives and it’s now about getting people to understand through counter-narratives that there is a different way to get things done, referring to the prevalence of terrorism and violent extremism around the world.”
“We have to change the mindset and delegitimise the false ideas and notions of hatred and violence,” he added.
The Club de Madrid, whose membership includes former President Olusegun Obasanjo, presented a report of a workshop it had conducted in Nigeria earlier this year on the issue of alternative narratives to counter violent extremism to Professor Osinbajo.
Former President Mogae of Botswana told the Acting President that the objective of the World Leadership Alliance was to promote democracy, and in that effort had organised the workshop that included all stakeholders and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The World Leadership Alliance is also has two former African Presidents as members; Festus Mogae of Botswana and Cassa Muttem of Mauritius
