About fourteen people were killed on Friday when a female suicide bomber penetrated a building camping returnees in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to Aid workers and Hospital officials, twenty four are currently undergoing treatment at the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.
Speaking in a telephone interview, head of the Rapid Response Team of the State Emergency Agency SEMA, Malam Bello Danbatta, said the female suicide bomber sneaked into the building close to the 20 Housing Estate around 8:30pm and detonated the explosives strapped on her.
“We have so far evacuated 38 victims comprising 14 dead and 24 injured and currently at the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri”, Dambatta said.
A Nurse who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident. “We received twenty four injured victims of suicide bombing from Dikwa and dead bodies of fourteen people, mostly women and children”, he said.
Babagana Musa, a youth volunteer who escorted the victims to Maiduguri from Dikwa said communication challenges and the fear of the unknown, especially at night, affected prompt response to the distress call made by the security operatives which made the victims to be taken out in the morning.
“There is no network in Dikwa, that was why we could not communicate on time”, Musa complained.
“There are no camps in Dikwa town as almost all returnees are in their homes, so this incident came as a very surprising thing to us”, says Mamman Hassan, who came to the hospital to check on the victims in order to see if he could identify any.
