The International Medical Humanitarian Organisation otherwise called Medicins Sans Frontier has opened a new treatment center for 70 malnourished children under the age of five in Gwange ward, Maiduguri, Borno State.
The Center was commissioned by the Borno State Commissioner For Health Dr Haruna Mshelia for public use.
The Health commissioner represented by the Director, Primary Health Care Development Agency Doctor Sule Mele described the Center as a life-saving point for malnourished children, stressing that, Borno needs more of such centers to close the gap in the rate of malnourishment in the state.
The Commissioner observed that MSF was among the early callers to salvage humanitarian and health crisis in Borno.
The Head of Mission, Medicine San Frontiers, Miss Anne Taylor said, an average of 470 malnourished children are to receive medical care every month.
She said the Center has an emergency room, intensive care unit and unit for acute and transition phases of malnutrition.
The program Coordinator Amande Bazerolle said MSF runs a total of five nutrition projects in Maiduguri, adding that each week the organisation admits about 140 children and about 4500 out patients under it’s feeding program across the city.
He said MSF has a permanent base in Maiduguri, Monguno, Pulka, Dikwa, Gwoza, Ngala and Rann while their mobile team are providing assistance to Bama, Dikwa and Banki.
