A 10-year-old child was among the three people killed during protests in Kenya after incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of the election on Friday.
He was hit by a stray bullet in Mathare, a district in the capital Nairobi.
One person was killed in Kisumu and another in Siaya.
Protests erupted in Raila Odinga’s stronghold communities after results were announced.
Witnesses and protesters said police used batons and even fired live bullets at unarmed protesters.
Many of the victims were hit by stray bullets. Three died, others were badly injured.
Calm
There was calm on Saturday in the stronghold of defeated presidential candidate Raila Odinga.
Street battles between security forces and protesters continued in several parts of the city of Kisumu for most of Friday night.
Observers called on opposition leaders and those with grievances to go to the courts, but they say the government controls the courts.
Amnesty International warned authorities against using excessive force against protesters.
Amnesty’s East Africa Researcher, Abdullahi Boru Halakhe said: “While the police should, of course, position their resources where violence and loss of life is likely to occur, officers deployed in the areas identified as violence ‘hotspots’ must not believe they have carte-blanche to use excessive force.”
However, Police claimed they used the right amount of response in the given circumstances.
Regional Police Commissioner, Wilson Njenga, said officers used “reasonable force depending on the threat.”
“Police were clearing the road and not going into homesteads. Police are patrolling the roads and protecting properties and we defend where there is threat to lives. They were enforcing the law,” he said.
He added: “Investigations will be done to establish if it was police or hooligans that caused the death of the person…Police are using tear gas and live ammunition is the last resort.”
Most shops in the city remained closed and some roads were still blocked on Saturday.
