A Non-Governmental Organization Borno Women Development Initiative in Collaboration with North East Regional Initiative has trained One hundred wives of Nigerian soldiers who lost their lives in the battlefield.
The wives of the fallen heroes were trained for two weeks in areas of knitting, local soft drinks manufacturing, operating machines for egrinding grains, seeds and vegetables, and tailoring.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony of the trainees at Agency for Mass Literacy Maiduguri , The Chief Executive Officer Of Borno Women Development Initiative Miss Fatima Askira said it’s part of the organisation’s mandate to alleviate the suffering of women as well as to promote girl child education through training, seminars and workshops.
After necessary consultation and findings, she said, BOWDI and NERI decided to come with the idea of training the wives of the fallen heroes to enable them become self-reliant.
According to Askira, the beneficiaries were carefully selected based on merit and described them as talented women that need societal support.
The State program manager of North East regional Initiative, Suleiman Dauda said for over the years, NERI has been helping the people of North East in areas of skills acquisition and pledged to explore more support opportunities for deserving people.
The North East Regional Initiative, he said, is a USAID funded project and commended the resilience of the trainees.
The General Commanding Officer Seven Division of the Nigeria Army, Brigadier General Manu Yusuf represented by Major Emetayu Dan applauded the initiative and welcomed many of its kind in future.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Fanta Baba Shehu and that of Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Inna Galadima charged the beneficiaries not to sell the materials presented them to support their business ventures.
For each of one hundred participants, those specialized in local soft drinks received Haier Thermocool freezer and Thermocool electric generator, Gasoline engine grinding machines for those in grinding areas, sewing machines for Tailors and knitting machines for knitting.
All the trainees went home with bags of rice, beans, 12 liters of vegetable oil, one carton of spaghetti, a bag of semolina and salt, including packs of Maggi seasoning cubes.
The Chairperson of NAOWA Seven Division Represented by Lucy Yakubu thanked the NGOs for the training and support rendered to wives of fallen heroes.
Some of the beneficiaries thanked Borno Women Development initiative and North East Regional Initiative for touching their lives at a critical moment.
