Adamawa state government says it is using sports as a means to rehabilitate displaced people as it announced that a 120-man contingent from the state, including IDPs, is attending the North-East Zonal U-17 Sports Festival in Bauchi.
Esther Dominic, the Technical Adviser, Adamawa State Sports Council, said the contingent comprised of athletes, coaches, and other officials.
She said the festival was an effective means to select talents that would represent the state and the country at various sports tournaments in the future.
She added that some of the participants were selected from the Internally Displaced Persons camps in the state.
“We have sports facilities in all IDPs camps and other centers in the state and with the return of peace, some IDPs camps became our catchment centers.
“We went out there and identified talents and brought them and placed them in either open or closed camps and today we are here in Bauchi,” she said.
The commissioner commended Governor Muhammadu Abubakar of Bauchi State for his financial support to make the tournament a success.
Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Yobe States are participating in the two-day long Games.
Borno State did not participate. Adamawa State is participating in basketball, handball, hockey and volleyball, while Yobe State features in handball and hockey.
