A 22-year old final year education student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been alleged to have stabbed his mother with a broken bottle following her failure to give him money.
Caleb Obasogie was said to have murdered his 55-year old mother, Josephine Igbineweka at their home in Iyamu Street, Textile Mill road, Benin, Edo State.
PM News reports that Caleb who was the last child of his mother had demanded money from her but following her inability to provide the money, he threatened his mother and locked her outside.
However, tragedy struck the next day when Josephine who reportedly slept at a neighbour’s house returned home. Eyewitnesses reported that Caleb had dragged her into a room in their apartment, locked himself and his mother up, stabbed and ripped her stomach with a broken bottle.
Caleb was said to have dangled his mother’s intestines before neighbours who rushed in to rescue her.
A neighbour of the deceased, the woman who accommodated her overnight described the incident as “Unfortunate” while her other neighbours left the house for fear of being interrogated by the police.
Three women who identified themselves as Children of the deceased however declined comments on grounds that they did not live with their mother.
Edo state police command Spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect has been arrested and detained at the textile mill road police station.
