The National Identity Management Commission is an established government agency that is responsible for registering and issuing of identity cards to eligible Nigerians from the age of 18.

The cards are said to be issued free of charge but in some states, some NIMC staff are collecting the sum of N200 from people before they are allowed to register.
Neptune Prime’s reporter went round one center in Nangere local government area of Yobe State and saw a crowd of people at the Sabon Gari NIMC registration unit who were there to register for a National ID Card.
It is totally against every tenet of establishing NIMC to collect money before allowing Nigerian citizens to register for the National Identity Number NIN.
The commission’s mandate is to “establish, operate, maintain and manage the National Identity Management System (NIMS) by carrying out the registration of citizens and legal residents as provided by the Act of 2007”.
However, this is not the case at Nangere where registrants are being charged N200.

The people of the town and it’s neighborhood are complaining bitterly about their actions as well. of the miscreants National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) personnel for committing various degrees of atrocities on the process of carrying out the registration.
Lamenting his ordeal, Sani Dahiru said “I have to trek all the way from my village before coming here. And I must pay N200 in order to be allowed to go in and register. The saddest of all is even if you have N190 they won’t accept it until you pay N200 cash”.
A staff of NIMC whose name is withheld said that they were collecting the money for maintenance such as fueling of their generators, buying A4 papers and subscription on their internet modem.
The staff also said that Federal government are not giving them anything to maintain the center apart from their salaries.
