Some Government Primary Schools in Potiskum, Yobe State were reported to have shut down as a result of rumors circulating in the State of polio vaccination going on in schools.
Neptune Prime’s Correspondent in Yobe went round some Primary Schools in Potiskum Local Government area and met crowds in front some Schools.
According to Fatima Musa Aliyu, a parent at one of the schools visited, the parents thronged the schools to demand their children returned home as there were rumours that the polio vaccine was responsible for killing some children in the state.
“I have three pupils in kwata Primary School Potiskum and I heard that State Government is doing a polio vaccine injection to our children which as a result of it some children lost their lives,” she said.
Habu Isa and Audu Suleiman, also parents whose children were in the Government Primary School lamented that “we don’t want the vaccine injection Government is giving to our children, we have sent our children to school to study not to be given any type of vaccine injection.”
They urged the State Government to consider their complain and investigate the claims that the vaccine was responsible for killing some children.
Mallam Yakubu Hassan a staff of Kwata Primary School who spoke on the issue said “today morning around 7.30am, Parents, and Guardians started arriving the School and pleading to the Staff to release their children they don’t need the education anymore and as a result of that the School management released the pupils to go to their respective houses because they are afraid of chaos from the parents.
“The School will be reopened when Universal Basic Education UBE ask us to open the school and continue our program,” he said.
Usman Gimba, the Coordinator, Primary Health Care Potiskum, lamented the situation adding that it was a rumor because they didn’t receive any letter from the State Government about the polio vaccine.
The Coordinator adviced Parents and Guardians to avoid listening to such rumours and debunked the story while condemning mischief makers who he said were responsible for peddling the rumour.
