The Presidential Committee on the North-East initiative (PCNI) and the Centre for Democracy and Development have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to fast-track Peacebuilding, sustainability, and reintegration in the North East.
The organisations forged the partnership on November 22 in Abuja to strengthen efforts to attain a sustainable peace in the region.
According to the PCNI Chairman, Lt. Gen. T.Y. Danjuma (rtd) who was represented by the Vice Chair, Mr. Tijjani Tumsah, the development of peacebuilding and re-integration architecture requires synergy and effective communication, and optimal results can only be achieved through interface among all actors.
He said that sharing with and learning from each other was in the best interest of the people of the North East and Nigeria in general.
“Strengthening and improving the links between formal and informal actors is imperative for the success of governmental and other initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable peace and mutual accountability.”
He observed that another positive potential outcome from establishing a common front in peacebuilding would be a comprehensive response system and accountability architecture that addresses grievances, which left un-resolved could jeopardize the prospects of a sustainable peace.
He also highlighted “issues of de-radicalisation, countering violent extremism, transitional justice” as deserving of high priority action for the promotion of stability and social cohesion in the region.
Tumsah added that the ongoing work of the Presidential Committee on Human Rights Abuses was a step in the right direction, which will provide content for accountability by all actors in the conflict and offer redress to survivors.
He suggested that the initiative should be complemented with a robust peacebuilding plan endorsed by all actors who are committed to its efficient delivery. Most of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), he noted, have expressed the desire to return to safe and reclaimed areas to pick up their lives, resume livelihoods, and reclaim their dignity.
In her remarks, the Director of the CDD, Mrs. Idayat Hassan, said that the MoU between the CDD and PCNI would go a long way to fast-track the development and rebuilding of the North East. She said that the CDD was very keen on building relationships with organizations active in the North East to promote the recovery of insurgency-affected communities.
She added that the Centre would work with International actors as well as grassroots organizations with a keen understanding of the situation on the ground. Mrs. Hassan expressed appreciation to the PCNI for extending a hand of fellowship to the CDD and urged all humanitarian actors in the North East to work with the PCNI in achieving its mandate of rebuilding the North East.
