Hundreds of persons in Geidam local government of Yobe have benefited from a week long medical outreach organized by the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative, PCNI, in partnership with Mai-Goje Foundation and the local government authority. The program which opened on Sunday March 11, provided treatment to hundreds of patients with different diseases, including those who came from neighboring towns of Dapchi, Yunusari and Yusufari. Other beneficiaries of the outreach were internally displaced persons, IDPs, who live in host communities.The medical services offered in the outreach included consultations, surgeries, tests, among other things.
According to Dr. Usman Abba, the chief executive officer of the foundation, although the programme targeted 10, 000 persons, the number of persons with eye ailments alone had surpassed the targeted number by the third day.
In the first two days, at the dental unit, there were 75 surgeries, 136 in ophthalmology and over 31 others in different units. At pediatrics and gynecology units, in addition to provision of free drugs, consultations, scanning and other services, including patients were also admitted where it was deemed necessary. A temporary laboratory was also set up as part of the program to conduct lab tests.
Alhaji Mulima Mato Geidam, the local government chairman who chaired the opening ceremony of the program expressed appreciation to the foundation and PCNI. PCNI’s state program officer in Yobe, Mr. Musa Damagum, assured the public that similar interventions are forthcoming.
