The biggest criticism of José Mourinho’s Man United reign came in the wake of United’s disastrous exit from the Champions league, a competition they haven’t reached the semis in 7 years and qualified for only twice in four years, in the hands of Sevilla.
Most United fans are not particularly angered by the exit from a competition they know their team stands very low chance of winning but the manner of the exit. United were lifeless, dull and overly cautious over the two legs, managing only 5 shots on targets against the 7th best team in Laliga. That is embarrassing for a club of United pedigree.
Then came José Mourinho’s remarkable post match comment “I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and knock Manchester United out with Porto and Real Madrid so is not something new for the club”. The comments didn’t go down well with Man United fans who feel it’s a jibe at the expense of their beloved club.
Perspective is hard to come by, in a situation like this, but José Mourinho’s reign has not been disastrous as some people are trying hard to make it seem. José was specifically tasked on fixing the mess he has inherited from painful years of David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal and returning man United to where they were under Fergie and he has done just that.
Man United have vastly improved under José this season and their improvement is only masked and made to look ordinary by Man City’s exceptional form. They are on course to rack up 80+ points, highest since the Fergie Era and enough to win them the tittle in previous seasons. They have the second best defensive record in the league, although that is mostly down to De Gea’s brilliance than Good defensive organization. They are best of the rest which means better than Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool, darlings of the media, if the league table is anything to go by. They also have a chance of winning a trophy in FA cup. They are only two games away from matching Arsenal’s record of highest number of FA cups.
So call for José Mourinho’s sack is puerile as it is premature. Beside, how many managers out there have the mentality to cope with United’s media attention or deal with their high profile players? Few.
Man United must stick with José Mourinho to continue with the job of team building and bringing back the glory years to Old Trafford they have tasked him with, which he has done very well so far.
