From Fatima Bukar, Abuja
The Presidential Committee on North East Initiative is committed to ensuring a safe and
harmonious post conflict society through the provision of access to justice.
The Vice Chairman PCNI Tijjani M Tumsah stated this at the launch of the NBA endowment fund in support of Access to Justice Interventions in the North East Region. He stated that
this is part of PCNI’s efforts aimed at resolving the legal status of former combatants
and building social cohesion through the implementation of a framework of transitional
justice in the North East.
Tumsah told the gathering of eminent lawyers that the PCNI was committed to ensuring justice, equity and fairness especially as the FG moves into the post conflict phase in the North East.
He further thanked the NBA for their continuous advocacy in ensuring that vulnerable
people in the North East access justice. The Minister of Justice and attorney general of
the Federation, Abubakar Malami, expressed concern that Nigeria is facing major
challenges in the form of the breakdown of law and order in some areas and communal
conflicts, noting that only few states are spared from the spiraling violence. The PCNI’s
framework includes the training of lawyers, judges and alternative dispute resolution
specialists to engender the provision of fair and swift justice.
