The FCT Police Command has deployed its personnel at strategic locations in the territory to prevent a procession by Shiite members.
The Shiites are commemorating the Muslim Ashura festival in remembrance of the killing of Hussain, Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, and demanding the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim el-Zakzaky, who had been in detention since 2016.
It is believed that the deployment of security personnel is to prevent break down of law and order.
They protested on Thursday but the police, supported by other security agencies, quickly deployed personnel to prevent the protest from turning into violence.
The action resulted in traffic gridlock, which forced commuters to trek long distances in getting to their destination.
Meanwhile, according to our reporter, three Shi’ite members were arrested in Potiskum, Yobe State, by the Nigeria Army. An eye witness, Musa Inuwa revealed that the incident happened along Central Primary School when the Shi’ites were performing their Friday Juma’a prayers and that some shots were fire in the air as a warning.
Reports reaching Neptune prime has it that a 19 year old bystander, Abubakar Umar Jeje, shot by a stray bullet has died at the Potiskum General hospital.
