The National Agricultural seed council (NASC) on Tuesday said, quality seeds production would enhance growth in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
The Director Seed Industry Development Technical Support and Commercial Service, Mal Idris Aliyu, stated this yesterday at the programme of adopted school seed demonstration field day, held at ITN Model Secondary School, Zaria on Tuesday.
He stated that, NASC being the regulatory institution of seed production is doing everything humanly possible to curve out seed adulteration in the country.
He said, the essence of taking the event to secondary school is to catch them young, to inculcate them the desire to develop interest in agriculture.
“More than 50 percent of all that is required for crop production is contained in the technology of seed, therefore we want the youth to understand the value of seed “
“the future belongs to the youth, it is for them to have the idea of seed, so that they can be the future plant breeders.”
Idris, said students at this level would develop the idea of using quality seed in crop production, as primary stage adopted by NASC to curve out the menace of seed adulteration in the country.
According to him, adopted school seed demonstration program cut across all the secondary schools all over the country so that youths will have update in using quality seeds.
Earlier speaking, Muhammad Ubandoma Hudu, director Northwest zone, NASC, said the programme involves students from five secondary schools adopted for the seed demonstration field day.
The schools are, ITN Secondary School, Kufena Science Secondary School, Jamaa Day Secondary School, and Basawa Day Secondary School Zaria.
He noted that, the program is to develop their skills to have adequate knowledge on quality seeds production.
He explained that, the present administration has attached top priority to agriculture, urged them to create a time in their various school for them to chat with the students on agriculture.
