A special anti-child trafficking task force in Anambra State has uncovered two houses in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, and Onitsha where pregnant teenage girls are kept until childbirth and their children sold to childless couples.

The task force led by Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Ndidi Mezue, found two malnourished pregnant girls kept in a room awaiting delivery in Obosi. The team rescued the girls and arrested the manager of the home, pledging to launch further investigation and action on the case.

Another baby factory was also uncovered during the inspection of orphanage homes in Onitsha.

An insider who pleaded anonymity told DAILY POST that only girls who had issues of unwanted pregnancies were kept in the room to keep their identities and existence secret until delivery.

The source also disclosed that “they were not properly fed because the home only manages to feed them to avoid much spending. “This is because they are interested in the sales of the babies and are mindful not to overspend, as they will also pay the mother.”

According to the source, the baby factories’ business had been booming because the operators deal in unwanted pregnancies by young girls outside wedlock. “They come here to avoid being seen until after delivery”.

“Some indigent girls are lured with money by the management of some baby homes and impregnated by men under the payroll of the baby homes”, the source further disclosed.

Community Watch Plus reported that the inspection team, which also comprised operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Service (DSS) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), including the ministry staff members, had visited community orphanages in Ogidi, Nkpor, Obosi and Onitsha, with the aim of inspecting the general environment, sources of water, hygiene and operational license of facilities.
