The Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, on Wednesday organized its maiden Arts Exhibition four-decades after the department of Fine and Applied Arts was established.
Prof. Alexander Kure, Provost of the College who spoke during the event held at the temporary campus in Kafanchan said the Institution was not only a place for producing teachers but also for learning entrepreneurial skills.
“Our students should also explore avenues to earn good fortune from the skills acquired,” he said.
Prof Kure said the exhibition provided an avenue where young talents can be encouraged to study Fine and Applied Arts, noting that the college had produced good hands, judging from the works displayed.
“I am highly impressed with the products of our students as these works can compete favorably anywhere,” he said.
He, then, urged the government, especially the local government authorities to consider awarding students of the Department contracts relating to artworks.
Mr Christopher Madugu, the Head of Department of Fine and Applied Arts of the College in an opening address said the event was a historic one, adding that it was heartwarming that the exhibition was the first of its kind since the inception of the Department over 40 years ago.
Madugu who said the department had over the years produced artists of high repute who were excelling in their professional endeavour, urged for support from Stakeholders to come to the aid of the Department so that it can compete favorably with other institutions.
He, then, commended the relentless efforts of the College Provost for the concern and attention given to the Department.
Prof. Gambo Duniya of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in a goodwill message said he was overwhelmed with the products of the arts department, adding, “we have always ensured that students that graduate from here are given admission in ABU to further their studies”.
He said the event was a historic landmark and advised that the event be documented in a catalog for future references.
Also, Mr. Dare Akawu, former Provost of the College commended the Arts Department for considering worthy to begin an exhibition, adding, “let us set the pace so that others will follow”.
“Over the years, we have agreed that the Kaduna State College of Education would be the flagship of teacher-training Institution in the Country and all hands must be on deck to actualize this vision,” Akawu noted.
