It was always likely that Real Madrid would face a difficult knockout tie in the Champions League round of 16, and those fears came to fruition on Monday morning as Los Blancos were paired with Manchester City, giving Pep Guardiola the chance to return to the Spanish capital.

The first leg will take place at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, and this tie will actually be the third time Guardiola has met with Los Merengues in the Champions League.

As Barcelona coach, he was the victory in the 2011 semi-final, which was memorable for a lot of the wrong reasons due to Jose Mourinho’s behavior, yet in his second knockout tie against Madrid with Bayern Munich, he was on the receiving end of a 5-0 hammering.

Manchester City will look to put their own domestic struggles to one side when they arrive in the Spanish capital, with the Champions League now seen as the club’s most likely avenue for glory.
