As one of his ways of showing appreciation, one of the beneficiaries of Kwankwasiyya educational scholarship has sponsored more than 150 students who hail from less privileged families in Kano state to study in various institutions in Nigeria.
Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, who was once sponsored by the administration of former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, to study in Malaysia, said he has decided to emulate his human development gesture of the empowering youths educationally in order to reduce the number of out of school children to the barest minimum in the state.
Speaking, Dr. Muhammad said the initiative which started in 2019 has so far sponsored 30 students to study various courses, particularly in the universities in Kano and other neighboring states, 40 in Islamiyyah schools and more than 70 in various Primary and Secondary schools.
The university don who lectures in the Department of Business Administration of Bayero University, Kano added that though the initiative is now limited to his Local Government of origin (Tarauni), he is optimistic that the gesture will subsequently cover more people across the state.
Dr. Muhammad explained that “We usually look for students with good grades in their SSCE, we then buy JAMB forms for them. For those who are able to score the required marks for admission among them, we struggle to secure admission for them in institutions of their choice and continue to sponsor them till graduation.
“Last year, we’ve sponsored 15 students, and this year so far, we have sponsored 15 from the little resources we have. Hopefully, the number will continue to increase. And interestingly, I don’t even know some of these children or their parents. The only eligibility criteria are competence and merit.
“I have already transformed the initiative into a foundation which I call IG Muhammad Foundation (named after me) for sponsoring students in Tarauni Local Government”, Muhammad added.
While promising to sustain the legacy beyond its present reach, Dr. Muhammad also explained that his dream is that one day, he too will be able to sponsor the less privileged students abroad, just the way Sen. Kwankwaso did to him.
He, therefore, thanked the former Governor for initiating the legacy, while calling on him to continue until illiteracy is reduced to the barest minimum in the state.
He finally called on philanthropists and other beneficiaries of the scheme to do the same in their respective capacities and in their immediate environments, noting that if all of them should sponsor at least 3-5 students, many would benefit from it.
