The President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims to look out for new moon on Friday.

In a statement by NSCIA Deputy Secretary-General Prof. Salisu Shehu yesterday, Sultan Abubakar said Ramadan will be 29 on Friday, hence the need to look out for the Shawwal moon, which ushers in Sallah.

He said: “Following the advice of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), Friday, 22 May, which is equivalent to Ramadan 29, 1441 AH is the first day to look for the Crescent of Shawwal, 1441 AH. However, on that day, the moon will set a few minutes before the sun which makes the sighting of the crescent practically impossible.”

He felicitated with the Muslim Ummah on the 1441 AH Ramadan Fast.

The Council, he said, prayed to Allah to grant the Ummah the opportunity to witness more of Ramadan.

Sultan Abubakar reminded the Ummah to pay Zakatul-Fitri.

“The Council urges all to ensure its delivery to the appropriate recipients (i.e. the poor) and guard against its diversion,” he said.
