As part of recovery efforts to ensure effective service delivery to the citizens, North East Multisectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP), Yobe office, has on Tuesday organised a stakeholders engagement meeting on Sustainability and Functionality of Community WASH Facilities in Yobe State at Summit Conference Hotel, GRA Damaturu.
The stakeholders were drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas of the State.
MCRP Project Coordinator, Musa Idi Jidawa, while giving the overview of the project in Yobe State explained that MCRP is part of the World Bank response to the North-East crisis.
The project according to him serves as a node of convergence in supporting the overall recovery efforts in the North-Eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
“The project has the following development objectives: rehabilitating and improving critical service delivery infrastructure, improving the livelihood of conflict and displacement- affected communities, strengthening social cohesion in the affected region.
“In the event of an eligible crisis or emergency, to provide an immediate and effective response to said eligible crisis or emergency, to achieve these PDOs, the project has four components; strengthening peacebuilding, stability and social cohesion, infrastructure rehabilitation and service delivery restoration and project management support, contingent emergency response components”.
Jidawa also explained on the Yobe MCRP WASH sector support saying that they have constructed hand pump boreholes, drilling of solar-powered boreholes at services delivery point as part of build back better principle, rehabilitation/upgrade of boreholes to solar-powered with livestock drinking trough and rehabilitation/upgrade of boreholes to solar-powered with reticulation among others.
Earlier speaking, the Commissioner Ministry of Water Resources, Senator Alkali Jajere said that no doubt the State needs to intensify efforts towards improving on the sustainability and functionality of the community WASH facilities in Yobe State “especially in this crucial time of COVID-19 pandemic a global issue of concern”.
Jajere said the state government under Governor Mai Mala Buni have embarked on the renovation and upgrade of water facilities with the drilling of new boreholes across the state.
“Most of the water collection points in the IDPs vulnerable and insurgency affected areas of the State have been repaired and new ones provided with emphasis on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)”.
He revealed that 51.21 per cent of the households in the state have access to drinking water from safe sources based on the baseline survey while 42.6 per cent of the households in the state have access to safe sanitary disposal.
Jajare also stated that the Ministry of Water Resources is responsible for the development of the water sector master plan and management of the database.
“In addition, the ministry also collaborate with Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Local Government and other NGOs”.
