Story from Kenneth AFOR, Lagos

Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola has charged leaderships of universities across the country to embark on academic activities that are research-driven and problem-solving in order to meet demands of the 21st century.

The governor gave the mandate virtually yesterday, during the 9th convocation ceremony of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN), in Osogbo.

He asked the various tertiary institutions in the country to wake up to their responsibility in being a part among thinkers and doers who are currently proffering solutions as a response to the current deadly coronavirus which has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives already adding that time has come for the institutions to look inward for a local remedy to the disease.

Also, the governor in his speech challenged the university to be a trailblazer of creativity and innovation in its academic activities even as the world is gravitating towards virtual engagement from conventional physical engagement.

“I charge the University to lead the society out of the challenges posed by Covid-19 and prepare the world for eventualities that may come in the future.

“At this critical time when the whole world is moving from physical to virtual engagement, the University must continue to bear the creativity and innovation torch for the industry and the society,” he said.

He, therefore, urged graduands to look inward and avail themselves of the various job opportunities presented by the pandemic and, also take advantage of the entrepreneurial skills sets which they might have obtained during their academic years to be employers of labour.

“I challenge the graduands to take up the challenge with courage and be solutions to the unemployment quagmire the nation and the world are grappling with.

“The accompanying new normal presented by COVIS-19 is an invitation to the graduands to look inward and put to use the entrepreneurial skills and competencies which the University has imbued in them to be job creators and employers of labour.

“The graduands are products and ambassadors of innovation and entrepreneurship which the University stands for in a world in need of thinkers as a solution to its myriad problems,” he said.
