A Nigerian national alongside one Ugandan lady has been arrested by Uganda’s aviation police for allegedly trying to smuggle narcotics to Cameroon and India through the Entebbe airport.

Two packages containing substances identified to be narcotic drugs were intercepted Tuesday during screening at the airport by anti-narcotics officer Patrick Onyango.

The packages were being moved by a courier service, Sky Net Worldwide Express, on behalf of a customer identified as Lydia Nannono.

Upon her arrest, Lydia revealed that the packages were given to her by a Nigerian called Rufus Okafor, of Kitende in Kajjansi, Wakiso District of Uganda.

Lydia led officers to Okafor’s house where he was arrested.

A drug test conducted on the packages, which contained about 306 grams of a creamy granular substance, classified them as heroin.

Police said a subsequent search conducted on Okafor’’s apartment turned up several items, including 10 packages of suspected methamphetamine of 939 grams; and 485 tablets of suspected methylenedioxymethamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy or molly, weighing 113 grams.

Police also reportedly found more mixtures of powdered substances suspected to be more packs of ecstasy of around 65 grams; money tied up in different currencies including $9,500, Sh98,000, 8360 Indian rupees and N700.

Also recovered were three passports belonging to a Nigerian whose role in the alleged crime has yet to be ascertained.

Okafor and Lydia have been taken into custody and are being detained at the aviation police unit in Entebbe, pending a formal charge in days. They face up to 20 years in jail respectively if convicted.
