Asisat Oshoala was born in her hometown on 9 October 1994 in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. She attended Air Force Primary School in Victoria Island, Lagos for her primary school education and proceeded to Aunty Ayo International School in Ikoyi, Lagos for her secondary school education.

She started playing football in secondary school. Initially, Asisat Oshoala’s parents expressed their resentment at their daughter’s interest in sports as she was born in a Muslim family.

The only person who supported her passion for football was her late grandmother.

The footballer revealed: “I was always into sport and was an athlete at first. I used to run home from school. I then started playing football with my friends and classmates. Mainly boys and that is when I became really interested. I did not think about becoming a professional then, though. I also did not have the support of my parents, who did not want me to play. It was only when they noticed that I was serious that they started supporting me.


Upon graduation from school, she joined FC River Internationals in Lagos and played for the team until 2013 when she started playing for Rivers Angels.

She gained immense popularity after the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada. Having scored seven goals, the forward became the tournament’s best player. Her performance significantly improved Nigeria’s position in the overall rating and earned the country a place in the final. In January 2015, she was signed to Liverpool Ladies and became the first African to play in the Women’s Super League.

“That was something special, and I am sure it will give me a lot more experience. I will have a chance to play in the Champions League”.

In October, she contributed to the African Women’s Championship victory as part of the senior Nigeria team. The same year, she was named as the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year and became the first player to get the new award from the BBC World Service.

In March 2016, she joined Arsenal Ladies. A year later, she moved to the professional Chinese football club Dalian Quanjian F.C.

In 2019, she joined FC Barcelona Femeni. As of today, she plays for the Nigerian national team and FC Barcelona Femeni in the Primera Division.
