Three Keke NAPEP “snatch and run thieves” were captured by 8 pm today around the popular Al-Amin Dagash Mosque roundabout in GRA, Maiduguri.
The thieves were apprehended by the community youth after snatching a mobile phone from a man riding his bicycle but he clung onto their tricycle and started calling for help, they collided with a car approaching from the opposite direction in an effort to trample the victim which drew the attention of members of the community.
The three thieves in the NAPEP are from Gwange and Bulumkutu areas of Maiduguri were found in possession of three knives.
The Keke NAPEP is registered with Napep number 376 AGE and plate number Gwoza-309-QA.
Two of them sustained injuries from the accident; one broke his leg and the other fractured his skull.
According to an eye witness and resident who assisted in the apprehension, Malam Yunusa said a car nearly ran over the victim while struggling to get his phone back before their intervention.
The three thieves were later taken away by members of the Nigerian Police Force, GRA police command.
The people of Maiduguri municipal have been going through a siege and criminality of one chance robbery in Keke NAPEPs.
The government in its efforts to mitigate the problem and other crimes commenced electronic registration of all Keke NAPEP riders in the state some months ago however it is going slowly as 70% of the Keke NAPEP riders are yet to be enrolled into the E-data base that would enable easy identification of owners and riders in times of need.
