Former Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Friday assessed her chances in the forthcoming election of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and said things were looking bright for her.

Okonjo-Iweala claimed to have the backing of 79 of the 164 members of the WTO including the African Union (AU).

“I feel the wind behind my back,” she said during a virtual press briefing.

She is locked in the contest with Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea. The global trade body is set to be led by a woman for the first time.

Okonjo-Iweala described the support of the AU as thrilling, adding that some Caribbean and Pacific countries were also rooting for her.

“I feel quite confident that across the regions, we will be able to attract support,” she said.

The European Union is yet to indicate its preference between the two candidates.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday, assured Okonjo-Iweala during her visit to Aso Villa in Abuja that he would do all within his powers to ensure she gets the job.
