National Emergency management agency (NEMA) has sensitised commercial vehicle drivers in Kano State on ways to avoid over speeding and overload during the Christmas and New year celebrations.
The NEMA Coordinator in charge of Kano and Jigawa States, Ado Sanusi during the sensitisation on Thursday in Kano said the call was necessary due to the high rate of road accidents along the highways.
According to him, there is a need for drivers travelling out of the state to always maintain the normal 120-speed limit so as to ensure a safe journey.
He said, “This sensitisation exercise was aimed to remind commercial drivers of the danger of over speeding and overloading so as to minimise crashes.
“The sensitisation campaign was flagged-off in Abuja And continued nationwide on road safety for the end of the year festivities and yuletide season.
“And it was also aimed at rallying all stakeholders to support the primary roles of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to minimise road crashes and loss of lives during the season and beyond.
“The aim was also to enlighten road users, strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations and prepositioning men and equipment for response to road traffic accidents before, during and after the yuletide.”
Also speaking at the motor parks, the Co-commander of the FRSC in Kano, Zubairu Mato said during this period, more people embark on journeys which cause the road to becoming busy.
He called on drivers to drive with care and also avoid the use of drugs while embarking on their journey.
He added that “in November, many deaths were recorded due to the negligence of the drivers.
“More accidents were recorded in November due to the negligence, impatience and greediness of the drivers.
Don’t let such greediness push you into over speeding.”
Mr Mato also appealed to the drivers and passengers to comply with the COVID-19 protocols, especially the use of face mask, hand sanitiser and reducing overload.
Some of the motor parks visited includes, Naibawa, Unguwa uku, Kano line and Zaria road motor parks.
