The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has explained that within the year 2020, the Commission received a total of 214 cases of human rights abuses from across Bauchi State.
State Coordinator of the Commission Mrs Dala Yatcit stated this today when she paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Bauchi State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Press Center
She gave the breakdown of the abuses to rape cases, torture, use of force, physical abuse as well as other forms of gender-based violence.
Dachit said that the Commission was able to amicably resolve some of the human rights abuses while others are pending at the courts for judicial arbitration.
The coordinator explained that the Commission is a statutory body set up by the law to encourage the general public whose rights are violated by anyone to feel free and report to the Commission for necessary action.
She advocated for the enactment of more laws to protect children’s rights opining that the existing ones are not adequate.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi State council Comrade Umar Sa’id, called on the NHRC to establish offices at local government levels across the state.
He said a lot of people especially those that live in the rural areas do not know about the existence and duties of the Commission despite the rate of rights violation in the rural areas.
Umar said that if the Commission has local governments offices, oppressed villagers could have their rights protected like other enlightened citizens.
He assured that Journalists in the state are ever ready to partner with the commission to protect the human rights of the people of the state and ensure that justice is done to victims of the violence.
