The Nigerian Police Force has nabbed suspected kidnappers who have been terrorizing Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

Also arrested by the Special Tactical Squad of Inspector-General of Police was one of the workers of the institution working at the security department, Aliyu Abubakar,  for ‘providing’ assistance to kidnappers who have on various occasions terrorized the institution.

The Public Relations Officer of Nigerian Police, CP Frank Mba, at the parade of no fewer than 25 suspects for various offences told journalists that a suspect, Malam Jafaru, who ‘provides’ spiritual guidance to the kidnappers, was also arrested.

The arrest comes in the wake of series of kidnappings that have hit the university campus and its environs, with staff and students were taken for ransom.

The four alleged members of the kidnap and armed robbery gang are said to be behind the recent kidnapping of some staff of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and their families.

“The gang members, Abubakar Aliyu, a.k.a Maigiwa, ‘m’ 27years; Aliyu Bello ‘m’ 18 years; Ishaku Kabiru, ‘m’ 30 years; and Abubakar Yakubu, a.k.a Dogo, ‘m’ 23years; were arrested following police investigations and rescue operations for the kidnap victims.

“The police team on 7th January 2020 arrested the suspect which led to the arrest of two other gang members; Abubakar Yusuf, a.k.a Ndalati, ‘m’ 42 years; and Abubakar Ahmodu, ‘m’ 20 years.

“Investigations reveal that Abubakar Ahmodu is responsible for spying on and identifying potential victims of kidnap for the gang.”

According to the police spokesperson, the suspects will be charged to court on conclusion of investigations.

Recall that in November 2020, gunmen forcefully abducted staff of Ahmadu Bello University and released his wife and daughter in a gunfight with police.

Kidnappers invaded the home of the staff on the university’s main campus in Zaria and took him, his wife, and daughter.

The campus security passed on a distress call to the police intelligence response team. The Police engaged the kidnappers in a gunfight. He was released later in December, same month nine students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria were Kidnapped along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway.

The incident involved 300 Level students of the Department of French on their way to Lagos for the language immersion program at the Nigeria French Language Village (NFLV) in Badagry which was earlier interrupted by the Coronavirus pandemic.
