The Governing Council of Federal University, Gashua in Yobe State, has approved the appointment of Professor Maimuna Waziri as the 3rd vice- chancellor of the university.
Announcing the council decision after the fifth council meeting held saturday 16th, January, 2021, the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council, Malam Ibrahim Akuyam said forty-eight(48) applied for the position out of which twenty-five (25) were shortlisted for interaction and three best candidates emerged from which the council chose Professor Maimuna Waziri as the new vice-chancellor.
Born in 1966 at Gashua town in Bade local government area, Maimuna started her academic career at University of Maiduguri as a Graduate Assistant in 1987 shortly after her graduation from Bayero University Kano, where she bagged her B.sc degree in Chemistry in 1986.
Thereafter, she proceeded for her Master’s degree at University of Ibadan where she obtained M.sc degree in Physical Chemistry in 1990. She obtained her PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry from University of Maiduguri, in 2006.
She continued with her lecturing career with the department of Chemistry, University of Maiduguri where she rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer.
In 1997, she was called upon to serve her State as a Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development and later Commissioner for Commerce and Industries from 1998-1999. She also served as a Special Assistant to the Executive Governor of Yobe State on Industrial Development from 1999-2001 and Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Damaturu from 2001-2007.
Professor Waziri was part of the Team saddled with the responsibility of establishing Yobe State University and when the University took off in 2007, she joined as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and at the same time appointed the Director, School of Basic and Remedial studies as well as the Dean, Faculty of Science from 2007-2009.
She is a recipient of a number of awards which include; The Michael Collins Memorial Prize for the best 1st year Physical Chemistry student in BUK in 1984, the Michael Collins Memorial Prize for the best graduating Chemistry student in BUK in 1986, Who is Who in Science and Technical Education in Africa (1997) etc.
She is also a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria and member of many professional bodies, among which are the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, American Biographical Institute of international Research and The Third World Organization for Women in Science.
Professor Waziri is to succeed the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Professor Andrew Haruna whose tenure will end on 10 February, 2021.
