Story from Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu
Yobe State will hold elections in its 17 local government areas on 27 February.
Dr Mamman Mohammed, the Chairman of Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing newsmen in Damaturu.
“I am welcoming you for yet another press briefing regarding Yobe state local government council election which is coming up on 27 February 2021.
“Our timetable of events which affects candidates under different political parties will start from 27 January 2021.”, Mohammed said.
He said over 1,365, 000 registered voters were expected to cast their votes under normal circumstances for the election of 17 local government chairmen, vice-chairmen and 178 councilors.
The Chairman solicited the cooperation of all security agencies in the state for the successful conduct of the elections.
“In our effort to achieve these we need an environment that is conducive, fully secured to allow free, fair, credible peaceful election without rancour or acrimony”, he said.
He also sought security advice and recommendations on which polling unit to be relocated or merged on security grounds.
He enjoined media organisations to enlighten the public of all election parameters and the credibility of people to be elected to occupy such sensitive offices.
Mohammed also called on all the management staff and other stakeholders of the commission to maintain neutrality during the exercise, saying, “You are specifically mentioned because of the important role you play in the conduct of the election”, he said.
