Story from Abdullahi ISAH, Kano

As tricycle operators deserted roads within Kano Metropolis to resist what they described as extortion by Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has offered to mediate in order to address the misunderstanding.

The Tricycle Operators began an indefinite strike yesterday to pressure the Traffic Agency to reverse the imposition of 100 naira tax daily to be paid through remita in a cafe.

They claimed that the payment through remita cost them 700 naira which is unacceptable.

But in a press briefing in Kano, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Kano state chapter, Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir, said they are making consultation from both sides to reconcile them and call off the strike.

Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir said “we are currently working in collaboration with Kano civil society forum to bring the leaders of the Tricycle Operators and the Managing Director of KAROTA to the negotiating table hopefully by tomorrow”.

“We will even reach out to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje over the issue if the need arises” said Comrade Minjibir.

The Tricycle Operators industrial action had negatively affected commuters within the state capital, forcing school children, working class and other commuters to resort to trekking.
