The state information commissioner, Malam Suleiman Tunau Anka, confirmed the incident to reporters, saying gunmen entered the school and abducted students around 1 am on Friday. However, Anka did not say how many students were affected.

Scores of the terrorists were said to have overrun a military checkpoint close to the school before storming the school itself. Several soldiers were said to have sustained injuries. Neptune Prime reliably learnt that vigilantes have mobilised themselves in a bid to rescue the girls.

The latest attack is the fourth in Northwest Nigeria in the space of just three months and comes at a time when Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle has called on Nigerians to commend his administration for its commitment to peace, reconciliation and the fight against piracy and insecurity.

Matawalle made the remarks when he received a group of repentant robbers who laid down their arms in Zamfara on Thursday.

He says he is confident that the system he has created will benefit the country as a whole and not just Zamfara State.

The governor insisted that not all Fulani were misguided, some of whom were involved in criminal activities against their will.

The weapons donated by the robbers included seven AK-47 assault rifles, two machine guns, ammunition and ammunition.

Since the launch of his program, Matawalle said there has been an increase in the number of gunmen who have accepted the program, repented and surrendered their weapons.
