Senate confirms Dr. Halilu Ahmad Shaba as DG NASRDA, Wakil as Fed. Civil Service Commissioner

The Senate on Monday confirmed Mr. Halilu Ahmad Shaba as Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency after rigorous screening by the Senate Committee on Science and Technology.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had earlier forwarded his nominee for confirmation to Senate in a letter dated 25th February 2021 and read during plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

The letter read in part: “Pursuant to Sections 14(1) and (2) of the National Space Research & Development Agency Act, 2010, I present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Mr. Halilu Ahmad Shaba as Director-General of the National Space Research & Development Agency”.

Dr Halilu was until his nomination, the acting Director-General of the agency after being the Director in charge of Strategic Space Applications in the same organisation from 2009 to 2019.

He has participated in workshops and conferences on Global Climate Change, Environmental Pollution and Food Security; Future Earth Observation Satellite Programmes and Geospatial Information Management; and Geospatial Technologies for Economic Diversification among others.

He previously worked at the National Population Commission, Federal University of Technology, Minna and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.

meanwhile, the Senate also approved the nomination of Engr. Wakil Bukar, on Tuesday, for appointment as a Commissioner for the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

The confirmation followed the consideration of a report of the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service at plenary.

According to the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano Central) said: “The nominee possessed the requisite constitutional requirements specified under the provisions of section 156 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) that qualifies him to be appointed as a commissioner in the Federal Civil Service Commission.

“Accordingly, he is hereby, affirmed to be the fit and proper person for confirmation by the Senate for appointment as Commissioner in the Federal Civil Service Commission.”

The Senate confirmed Wakil’s nomination in a Committee of the Whole.
