Nemanja Matic has vowed that Manchester United will play with positive intent in their showdown with AC Milan.

United head to the iconic San Siro stadium for their Europa League last-16 second leg against the Italian side, needing to better the first leg scoreline of 1-1. Only a high-scoring draw or an away win will suffice for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

And although Matic accepted United face a difficult challenge in Milan, he insisted United would come to play attacking football.

“Now we know more about them,” the Serbian midfielder told United’s in-house media. “We know the way they play. We just have to be worried that they are a top team.

“They play good football, they have a good coach and it’s going to be an interesting game. It’s going to be hard for us again, but we are confident and we will try to win the game.

“We will play our football because we are not a team that only defends. We always want to score more goals. I think we will play our football the same way we are always trying.

“We train every day and we will see. We are ready to compete and we have 90 minutes to show our quality.”

Manchester United stretched their unbeaten run to 12 matches in all competitions by beating West Ham 1-0.

Scott McTominay forced an own goal from Craig Dawson to secure an important win in United’s bid to finish second this season, as their focus now switches to important games against AC Milan and Leicester — in the Europa League and FA Cup respectively.

Matic admitted it would be a special occasion for him to play in Milan’s famous stadium and is desperate for United to progress deep into competitions this season. They were three-times beaten semi-finalists in the cups last season.

“I never had the opportunity to play at the San Siro, this is my first time, so I am looking forward to that,” he added. “It’s an iconic stadium as everyone knows and we are happy that we can go there and compete with them again.

“We are coming to the end of the season so the quarter-finals and semi-finals are waiting for us. We have to show our character, our quality, and we have to show that we are ready to win some titles.”
