4 police officers feared dead as IPOB/ESN members raze divisional stations in Enugu, Imo (Video)

Suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the Eastern Security Network (ESN) on Tuesday, attacked Iwollo Oghe police station in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, killing four officers.

The officers were said to have died of gunshot wounds sustained during a gun battle in efforts to repel the attack.

Mohammed Ndatsu, commissioner of police in the state, who confirmed the incident to journalists during the on-the-spot assessment said some of the assailants escaped with bullet injuries.

“The hoodlums, who came to the Station in their numbers, opened fire on Police Operatives on duty but were vehemently resisted, and in the ensuing gun duel, several of the assailants escaped with bullet injuries,” he said.

“Unfortunately, four (4) of the Operatives, who sustained severe gunshot injuries, were later confirmed dead in the hospital, while parts of the Station was set ablaze by the assailants.”

Ndatsu extended his condolence to the families and close friends of the officers, who according to him, paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

He noted that an investigation has been launched into the attack to fish out the assailants and their cohorts.

Elsewhere, the Orji Divisional police station in Imo State was set on fire by the outlawed IPOB members.

It was reported that the armed men stormed the station around 12:00pm on Tuesday.

There were also reports of a heavy shooting in the area.

The incident happened hours after suspected invaders burnt down the Iwollo Oghe Police station in Enugu in the South-Eastern part of the country.

In recent weeks, there have been consistent attacks on government facilities which have compounded the security challenges in the region.

Police stations, correctional facility and offices of the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC), have not been spared in the incessant attacks.

The INEC office in Obollo-Afor was recently razed by hoodlums with sensitive materials and documents destroyed.

The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, in the bid to address the attacks, launched a special operation last week designed to restore peace to the south-east

Baba vowed to return the region “to its historical pride of place where its people are known to be peaceful, tolerant, innovative, industrious and entrepreneurial.”
