Real Madrid’s iconic Santiago Bernabeu stadium caught fire on Wednesday night.
According to the local fire department, a piece of insulation material caught fire during some standard welding work.
That duly led to smoke billowing out from the top of the stadium and across the surrounding area, while fire alarms across the venue sounded.
Construction workers working on the big-money reconstruction project duly put it out themselves.
It had been extinguished by the time fire marshalls arrived at the scene.
No one was hurt during the incident.
Madrid’s home – which hasn’t been used during the coronavirus pandemic, with first-team matches taking place at the club’s training ground at Valdebebas – is in the middle of a £600million facelift.
The huge operation, which is due to be finished in time for the 2022-23 season, will see a fully retractable roof and a 360-degree video screen that stretches around the entire ground installed.
Shops, restaurants and a hotel are also due to be added to the complex.
