On Tuesday, a 400 level student of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Emmanuel Maduka, was crushed to death alongside two others by a truck belonging to Dangote Cement Plc.
The truck, which was conveying cement to an unknown destination, was said to have slid off the road while trying to avoid a motorcycle rider and a Toyota Camry along the ever-busy Police Station road in the university community.
Late Maduka’s friend, Mr Matthew, popularly known as Biggy, told Daily Independent that Maduka gained admission into the university many years ago through Pre-degree and he was a First Class student with a CGPA of 4.7 in the Department of Economics.
Matthew, while lamenting the death of his friend, said: “How can this happen? Today is supposed to be his mother’s birthday. Who will disclose this bad news to his mother now?”
At the time of filing this report, the body of Maduka was still trapped under the trailer, as police officers, vigilante operatives, personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and sympathisers were still making frantic efforts to lift the truck off the ground and possibly rescue any other victim trapped.
Sources gathered that apart from the undergraduate, a motorcycle (okada) rider and a lady, both yet to be identified, were also killed by the truck, stating that the death toll might increase, that other victims are still trapped under the trailer and bags of cement that fell off the truck during the tragic incident.
It was further gathered that the truck driver escaped while the conductor of the vehicle was beaten up mercilessly by an angry mob and, thereafter, handed over to the police.
