Fire guts 91 shops in popular fabric market in Lagos

On Thursday night, no fewer than 91 shops were affected by the inferno which gutted the popular fabric market in Oshodi, Lagos.

The fire which was contained following the combined efforts of emergency officials, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos Fire Service started around 8 pm and was put off on Friday morning.

Asides from the 91 shops lost to the inferno at the famous Cairo market, four Administrative offices and goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director-General of LASEMA in a preliminary report said: “Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, some lock-up shops were on fire.”

Dr Olufemi who also confirmed that some explosive devices were found at the market, said the investigation is ongoing, but no life was lost to the incident.
