One suspected cultist has been killed while some sustained injuries in a clash between cultists and the state police command on Friday in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Ajayi Okasanmi, the state police command Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident while adding that, “We had gone to put a situation under control this morning involving two cult groups and we made some arrests.

“These boys mobilised themselves and begin to attack the police as a result of one of them who jumped inside a canal in Surulere while trying to avoid arrest.

“We called the Fire Service to retrieve the body but the boys came to disrupt them and later, the police retrieved the corpse from the cult group.

According to an eyewitness at the scene, the suspected cultists from Baboko, Oja Titun and Surulere axis of the ancient town have been engaging themselves in a supremacy battle before it finally turned into a bloody situation in the affected areas.

While trying to restore normalcy in the affected areas, the police arrested one of the cultists who was handcuffed but later jumped into the river canal at the Surulere area of the town to avoid being taken to the station.

This further led to the retaliation of other suspected cultists and angry mob for the release of their arrested colleagues at the Surulere Police Division.
