World Bank has revealed that the office of the Kano State’s Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), is the most transparent among all other offices in the country.
This was disclosed by the National Coordinator of the project, Dr Salisu Dahiru, during the distribution of Resettlement Action Plan (RAP)’s Cheques to project affected persons in respect of the construction of Yansabo, Tofa Water Conservation Structures and provision of minor irrigation facilities, held recently at Africa House, Government House of the state.
While acknowledging the commitment of the Kano state government, in proper facilitation for successful execution of the project, Dahiru said whenever there is any financial document to be considered, Kano gets approval first before any other state.
He said “Your Excellency, it is worth noting that, your administration gives all necessary attention to this project. Whenever we have a project development document, we find it highly professional and skilful. That is why our project development document is always being copied by other states.
The National Coordinator commended Governor Ganduje for his unrelenting effort in making sure that the NEWMAP project succeeds, revealing further that, It is part of governor Ganduje’s effort that moves our Kano office forward. Kano was the only state that participated in China’s Conference, among others.
In his remarks, Governor Ganduje appreciated saying that “We place priority on this project, which is why we don’t relent. We released the sum of N300 million counterparts funding to facilitate the successful execution of the project”.
He summed up the importance of the project that, “When completed, it will provide various means of livelihood to our teeming population. That was conceived to provide farming opportunities and reduce flooding, thereby, complementing government’s effort in the provision of food security to the state and the nation at large”.
The Governor added that Kano has been a pacesetter in this direction, that we have provided various interventions under the project package. As well as other interventions through various ministries, departments and agencies.
The distribution of the cheques to the affected persons, according to the governor, is “…with a view to legally take the possession of the site and enable early commencement of the project. All the project affected persons will be compensated appropriately in line with the policy of the state, federal government and World Bank.
The state has six projects for erosion and four projects for underwater conservation structure and minor irrigation facilities. The sum of over N68 Million was distributed to the beneficiaries from ‘Yansabo and Tofa local government areas.
