A humanitarian worker with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Abubakar Garba Idris, also known as (Alooma) has regained freedom after being in Boko Haram captivity for almost 5 months.

Idris, a Senior Protection Assistant with UNHCR, was abducted along Damaturu-Maiduguri Road, Borno State on 2nd January 2021 around 8.30 am.

Though there is no authentic confirmation to ascertain if he was released by either ISWAP or the Boko Haram sect, it is, however, certain that he is now free and shall be safely reunited with his family and friends.

Alooma’s release came barely two days after a Plateau reverend, Polycarp Zango, was also freed from captivity. Zango had been kidnapped in October 2020 on his way to a Ministers’ conference in Gombe.

It was gathered that the insurgents attacked a convoy of commuters near Matari village between Minok to Jakana road last year, where Abubakar Garba Idris (Alooma) was kidnapped.

It was revealed that the insurgents had appeared in military uniforms, and mounted a roadblock on the highway with three Hilux vans and motorcycles.

While searching the passengers, Idris attempted to throw away his Identification Card but was unfortunately sighted by one of the terrorists. They ordered him out of the vehicle and left with him while allowing the rest of the passengers to continue their journey.

Apart from Reverend Zango and Idris Alooma, the terrorists have also released other captives, which include a businessman, some civil servants and other civilians who were abducted during various attacks on towns, IDPs Camps and along Damaturu-Maiduguri Highways.

The freed captives are undergoing medical checkups in various hospitals and will speak to some military intelligence before being released.
