Aliyu Abubakar Aziz, Director General, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has disclosed that the sum of N25 billion will be needed to enrol 100 million Nigerians in the ongoing National Identity Number (NIN) registration exercise.
Aziz made this known on Tuesday while appearing before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The Director-General said the proposed sum will be presented on Wednesday (today) before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which is currently being chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to him, about 57 million Nigerians have so far been enrolled, adding that 90 servers will be needed to register the targeted figure.
He said, “For us to reach 100 million, we will need 90 servers. We have enrolled 57 million as of today. We will ask for N25 billion from FEC tomorrow to buy more servers to take the whole of the population.”
The NIN registration which was initiated by Goodluck Jonathan in August 2014 to create, operate and manage Nigeria’s national identity card database, integrate the existing identity database in government institutions, register individuals and legal residents, assign a unique national identification number and introduce general multi-purpose cards.
