A police officer, Ifeanyi Henry who is an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), is currently being detained at Aba Central Police Station in Abia state, for causing ‘serious tension’ at Okwu na Uka Street and St Michaels Road in Aba.

According to reports, the police officer had on Saturday night allegedly suddenly pulled out his pistol and started shooting sporadically and assaulting people especially women, children and store owners without any provocation.

Aside from targeting civilians, Henry was said to have scared his fellow police officers with his pistol and assaulted passers-by. He was later disarmed after he ‘attempted to shoot a shop owner, after which he immediately made an attempt to grab an AK-47 rifle held by one of the officers in a bid to continue his shooting spree.’

His colleagues struck his hand repeatedly before he left the gun, they bundled him into the police van and drove him to the station.

The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Geoffrey Ogbonna who condemned the actions of the officer confirmed that Henry was in police custody, and will be disciplined accordingly.

He said “The Nigerian Police Force is a disciplined organisation, and there are laid down procedures in handling the issue of any erring officer irrespective of his rank and cadre.

“I condemn the actions of the police officer and I have to tell you that he is in custody right now and he will be treated departmentally.” He added.
