Story from Saleh INUWA, Kano

Kano State Governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has accepted the recommendation of the Committee on reform and prerogative of mercy that recommended the release of 30 prisoners in the state, including Rahama Hussein who allegedly killed her husband in 2014.

In 2014, Rahama who was married to Tijjani Basiru of Darmanawa Quarters in Kano was alleged to have killed her husband 7 days after their marriage, she was promptly arrested and arraigned before Justice R.A Sadiq, though she denied the allegation, she was later thrown into prison without sentence because she was underage.

At the time the incident happened, Rahama Hussain was only 16 years old, and she was said to have been forced into marrying Tijjani Basiru by her parents against her wish, she therefore allegedly killed the husband 7 days after their marriage, but was only sent to prison because, under penal code law, a pregnant woman or underage cannot be sentenced to imprisonment.

The prison authorities where she was serving her sentence also recommended that she should be released because of her good behaviour, as such, the committee under Justice Ishaq Bello included her name among those forwarded to the governor for his forgiveness, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on his part accepted this and ordered that they should be released immediately.

Rahama Hussein who was in tears when she was asked to go home as a free person, thanked the prison authorities, thanked the Justice Ishaq Bello Committee and the Governor for including her among those to be pardoned and released immediately, her released was confirmed by the Darmanawa prison spokesperson, Musbahu Kofar Nassarawa.
