A team of Surveillance, Investigation and Monitoring (SIM) unit of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Wednesday uncovered a lubricant adulterating syndicate in Sokoto State.
The unidentified suspect was arrested along the Gidan Mada area of the Sokoto metropolis in possession of several jerry cans of adulterated engine oil.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, the state’s Coordinator of SON, Alhaji Jubrin Mohammed, who was represented by SIM team leader, Murtala Muhammad Yusuf, described the discovery as regrettable.
“Last time we got a hint that someone is selling adulterated Total engine oil, we swung into action and arrested the suspect,” he stated.
He further explained that despite SON’s several arrests in the past, deviant Nigerians persisted in the act of adulterating engine oil and selling it to unsuspecting Nigerians.
He added that the adulterated engine oil destroys machinery and engines.
According to him, SON would not relent in the ongoing fight against unscrupulous elements who persist in defrauding Nigerians through their dubious acts.
He however advised dealers and manufacturers to always do the right thing by upholding standards in all their undertakings, stressing that it will ensure a vibrant economy through the strengthening of business as they adhere to international best practices.
The coordinator assured Nigerians that the organisation will continue to intensify efforts in apprehending criminals perpetrating such acts through information gathering.
He said the arrest of perpetrators will serve as a deterrent to others and also rid the country of substandard products.
He, therefore, called on Nigerians to come up with useful information in supporting the battle against substandard products by reporting to SON any unwholesome practice in the manufacturing sector.
