Kogi: Lawmaker empowers 600 farmers

Six hundred farmers in Kabba/Bunu and Ijumu Local Government Areas of Kogi State have been empowered towards improving food security and stimulating economic growth.

The empowerment scheme is anchored by the National Productivity Center, facilitated by the member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Biodun Faleke.

Managing Consultant of the Scheme, Doctor Tunde Arosanyin who stated this to journalists in Lokoja said the programme is expected to cover the Western Senatorial District of Kogi State and run into the early part of next year.

Doctor Arosanyin said the farmers involved have been placed on a monthly stipend of ten thousand naira for the next six months with a million naira capital base.

According to the Consultant, the primary and secondary crops to be grown by the farmers are sesame, maize, groundnut and improved cassava stems.

He also said that solar lights and boreholes have been provided for the farmers on their cluster farms to achieve set goals.

On the security of the farms, Doctor Arosanyin said the farmers have employed vigilantes to protect their crops to avoid clashes with herders.

Doctor Arosanyin said the products from the scheme would be taken as a buyback by the Companies involved in the partnership.

He reiterated the commitment of Honourable Biodun Faleke to work in tandem with the Federal Government policy of reducing unemployment through agriculture by providing jobs for the nation’s teeming youths as well the State Government initiatives for the agricultural revolution.
