World Tourism Day: Dubai, New York top list of world’s most expensive vacation destinations
World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on 27 September to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political, and economic value. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth’.
While traveling is expensive, it is important to know that certain travel destinations are more costly than others.
The World Tourism Day 2021 official celebration will be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire, celebrating tourism’s ability to drive inclusive development and the role it plays in promoting respect while generating opportunities for millions across the globe.
As the world opens up once again with fewer restrictions after the Covid-19 lockdown, the theme of the 2021 World Tourism Day focuses on the importance of inclusive recovery and ensuring that no one is left behind. Additionally, the day also highlights the importance of the travel industry in preserving and promoting the culture and heritage of a nation.
A Nigerian, Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi first proposed the idea of marking September 27 of every year as World Tourism Day. He was finally recognized for his contribution in 2009.
Everyone is a “tourist” at some point in their lives, Tourism can be seen simply as the activity of people who travel and stay in places outside their usual environment for leisure, business, or other related purposes.
World Tourism Day highlights the travel industry’s social, economic, political, and cultural significance. Tourism is one of the most relevant sectors globally as it is capable of giving jobs to millions of people.
According to United Nations (UN), the tourism sector employs one in every ten people on earth, and for some countries, it can represent over 20 percent of their GDP.
Evidence shows that sustainable tourism is a great tool for development and poverty alleviation in developing countries. As tourism leads to employment diversification on a local level, thereby reducing the vulnerability of the poor.
Which is a wonderful contribution to a nation’s economic growth, aside from being a huge influence on the economy, tourism also creates business opportunities, thereby expanding a country’s economy.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) instituted World Tourism Day in 1980. The Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation were adopted worldwide which marked a historic moment for the global tourism industry.
On September 27, 1980, the first World Tourism Day was celebrated to mark the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes.
